The second Object Journeys partnership project was run with Leicester Museums and Galleries and a diverse group of community curators.
In Leicester a group of artists from across the city, who all have an understanding of art from different parts of the world, co-curated an innovative display to invite visitors to explore new ways of understanding paintings in collaboration with staff from Leicester Museums and Galleries. Visitors are encouraged to form their own feelings and opinions on these paintings, explore the different contexts in which they are produced and reflect on the different ways value is given to paintings. This is achieved through the way the paintings are displayed in a salon-style hang, through text panels, videos, and interactive conversation-based games, a poem and soundscape developed by members of the project group.
The display, now open, in the World Arts Gallery of New Walk Museum and Art Gallery shows nine paintings from Leicester Museums’ permanent collections and three paintings on loan from the British Museum and can be seen until 31 March 2019.
